Just one month after filing for divorce, James Van Der Beek publicly stepped out with his new girlfriend … but is he really ready?
When the former Dawson’s Creek star — who separated from his wife of six years, Heather McComb, in the spring — brought model Kimberly Brook as his date to the Summit on Summit: Kilamanjaro bash on Dec. 9, we couldn’t help but wonder: When is soon TOO soon?
“They say there’s a quotient. For every year you’re married, it will take about that many months to grieve,” explains relationship expert Maryanne Comaroto. “That’s the rule of thumb, but it’s obviously not the only one. Everybody grieves differently.”
More specifically, men and women grieve in completely different ways, says our expert. “Men don’t like to be alone. Statistically they remarry more quickly than women do,” adds Comaroto. “You’d think women have that issue but it’s the guys who do. They like that idea of someone who nurtures them, that someone is there for them.”
Women, on the other hand, take a bit more time to heal their wounds. “We become more discerning about our next relationship,” says Comaroto.
Our expert’s advice — don’t jump into anything so suddenly without thinking. “Statistics show rebound relationships have a poor chance of lasting!”
