Katy — Are You Really Ready for Russell and His Demons?
Recovering addict Russell Brand was scoping out diamond rings at Cartier, but an addiction expert tells HollywoodLife.com that he and Katy might be moving too fast
Katy and Russell, you need to put the brakes on your three-month relationship! The English comedian was spotted Dec. 11 in London browsing the diamond ring section at Cartier, but it’s way to soon to give his girl such nice ice, an expert tells HollywoodLife.com, and Katy should be wary.
Because Russell is a former sex and heroin addict and a recovering alcoholic, Katy should tread extra carefully with this relationship. “Addicts sometimes make impulsive romantic decisions,” Los Angeles-based clinical psychologist and addiction expert Dr. Seth Meyers tells us. “The inclination is often for the addicts to jump into the relationship as a means of self-medicating.”
Katy and Russell’s hot love affair kicked off in September at MTV’s Video Music Awards in NYC, when the two were caught cuddling at hotspot Avenue. Since then, Russell’s admitted in interviews that he’s completely head over heels in love with Katy and would love to settle down and have a family.
Dr. Meyers strongly recommends the couple put the brakes on. “Serious romantic relationships can trigger strong addictive feelings, which can lead to relapse,” he says.
Katy should also be concerned about her own emotional well-being. “Addiction affects everyone,” Dr. Meyers explains. “It has a great impact on the romantic partner. [Katy] might end up worrying more about Russell than herself. This is dangerous because it can create co-dependence.”
But just how long should these two lovebirds wait before tying the knot? “Marriage is something maybe you think about after you’ve had at least two years of sobriety and have been with your significant other around two years,” advises Dr. Meyers.
