Jay & Dave — How Did Oprah Keep You Two from Killing Each Other on Your Super Bowl Spot?
Only Oprah could bring these two late-night foes together!
Whoa, that was awkward! David Letterman and Jay Leno at the same Superbowl party…on the same couch?? Who could possibly make the two play nice together? Why Oprah Winfrey, of course! The late-night talk-show rivals put aside their differences for one hilarious Superbowl commercial last night.
The idea was Dave’s — he even wrote the script, said Rob Burnett, executive producer of “Late Show with David Letterman,” to the LA Times. Jay was a good sport and traveled to New York on the NBC company plane to film it, arriving at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York last Tuesday Feb. 2 wearing a hooded sweatshirt, sunglasses, and a fake mustache.
“We wanted desperately to keep this a secret,” Burnett said.
With the big Conan/Leno shakedown at NBC, the two have been at each others’ throats even more than usual in their nightly monologues in the past few weeks — Jay digging on Dave’s well-publicized romantic life and Dave on Jay’s “Tonight Show” woes.
Bravo, gentlemen! That’s how to take an awkward situation and turn it into comedy gold.
