Bonnie Says: Oh No! The Downhome Obama Oval Office Makeunder Is A Disaster — You Agree?
Don’t you think the President’s office looks like a family room now? Who put throw pillows on the presidential couches and turned the coffee table into a giant TV tray?
BFFs, I’m appalled by the Oval Office makeunder, are you? Don’t you feel like the President of the United States needs to sit in a room that has a certain regality to it? The Oval Office couches shouldn’t look like they’re ready for White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs to sprawl out on with clickers, ready to watch the football game!
And what’s with those Crate and Barrel-esque lamps? I can’t believe that characterless lamps that look like they cost $49.99 have replaced the elegant gold and porcelain fixtures of before.
I understand that Barack — I’m calling him by his first name because he appears to want us to think he’s our neighbor — has used the concept of the “President is just like us,” to relate to us regular folks. but de-formulizing the oval office is taking it too far!
We don’t want the President to seat great leaders on casual corduroy couches and brown leather wing back chairs. Huh? Does the Pres want to walk around in slippers and get all cosy in there? We don’t want him to be cosy. We want him to be a dignified leader with sophisticated tastes.
Barack — what have you done with the blue striped chairs that picked up the blue of the Presidential seal on the rug? I say, makeunder, be banished! Pull out the old furniture. Better for it to be threadbare and tasteful, than brand new and bonkers!
Where’s Glenn Beck when you need him? Glenn— forget your irresponsible race-baiting and do something useful! March on the White House and protest the embarrassing Oval Office makeunder!

Apparently the quote attributed to Martin Luther King on the rug in the Oval Office was actually from a well-known abolistionist who died in 1860. Too funny and rather pathetic for such a high office to make such an amateur mistake in accuracy. These people are pretty sloppy with details.

Definitely inappropriate for this space, though would work fine for a family room. Nothing wrong with being comfortable, but it’s still possible to do so in a formal way. I can’t imagine sitting on, uh sinking into, those sofas while wearing business attire. Maybe he does is work relaxed on the sofa, “Hey kids, feel free to jump on the other one. The next prez will probably replace these anyway.”
Maybe we should just have a reality show/competition in which famous designers compete for the best redesign – as voted by America. Audiences throughout the nation will tune in to see who wins, and the network can sell premium ad space. Between the cost to text-vote and the commercials, maybe we could raise money to offset the country’s debt a bit. Just a thought….

For years Obama has been tightly associated with Wright and the next year he is a Muslim; we constantly check his birth certificate, constantly fuss about the number of vacations, etc., etc., etc., and now we debate the way the office is decorated. Junk like this make us look like America The Ignorant. Take a history class and stop listening to Fox News!
P.S. The office is reflective of the times, you idiots!

My question is; why when the country is over 14,000,000,000,000.00 in debt and climbing, when there is real unemployment of around 15%, not the 9.5 the Feds want you to believe, and the USA has an economy growing at less than 1.5% is ANYONE in the Federal Government spending ANYTHING?!?!?! We can’t repay our debt to China and we have money to remodel the friggin Oval Office?!

The Announcement

After looking at how the oval office has been decorated over the decades, none of them looked very “regal”, so I’m not sure why you think Obama’s office should, especially given that we are in a Great Recession. Besides, doesn’t “regality” insinuate some kind of royal appearance? He is not a King, he is a President picked by the people from the people. In case you don’t remember we revolted against a monarchy. The only “regal” thing in the office should be, and probably always will be, Queen Victoria’s desk she gave as a gift.
Personally, I think the best design was under Clinton where the designers weren’t afraid of color, but then critics called that design too “loud”. Bush Jr.’s design was significantly scaled down when it came to color, using the same palette that Obama’s designers seem to have went with. It seems Obama replaced Bush’s furniture with more comfortable chairs and sofas that may not look stupendous, but nevertheless reflect the idea that the Oval Office, at least under Obama, will be a calm environment where officials can discuss ideas freely in a relaxed setting; as opposed to an Oval Office that would probably appear too intimidating to visitors, already intimidated enough as it is being in the White House, had they gone with a more “regal” design.
Besides, had the Obama Administration gone with more expensive furnishings, you know we would never hear the end of that.

Its sad that people have to find such small things to criticize President Obama. So what if you don’t like the couches and pillows! Is that that important to you? Let’s applaud him for being “human” and trying to relate more to the general public BONNIE…try to think of something he did recently that positive, like stop the war!

you are all crazy and have absolutely no interior design/decorating savvy. The writer of this article is right on in her analysis. The sofas WERE formal and that is THE POINT. The coffee table was more historical looking and now it looks like something you’d get from Pier One Imports to put your t.v. on. Seriously, it is just plain tacky. The overall room looks way too casual now for the PRESIDENTIAL OFFICE. Tacky tacky tacky.

Dittos! It looks like a totally different room and anyone who can’t see that is either blind or just doesn’t have an eye for that sort of thing. The room looked presidential before and now it looks like…not even a living room but a family room where you watch football. Uh…sorry guys but Obama has plenty of other rooms to watch football in and to be “casual” in, he doesn’t need the oval office for that.

The previous sofa’s were NOT formal! Speaking from a professional decorator! The previous sofa’s should be on a porch in Grandma’s house in Kentucky… that room was so outdated it screamed for a makeover… I love the changes, in fact I would have added more changes..The room is classy now… You know it is such a shame, that us caucasian people, or some of us, (Not All) look for whatever reason to attack a black president. You try to cleverly hide your racism, (yes racism) it is not a cliche word from the left wingers because I am a right winger.. you try to hide your hidden racism by making up juvenile reasons to criticize the President for even his LACK OF OLD LADY DECORATING SKILLS… The room is beautiful and I designed many rooms all over the united states.

there is very little change from the room before the ashtray is the same the drapes are the same the little dresser on the wall close to the desk is the same and there are throw pillows on the couch in bushes picture. i truly think if obama came to everybody in america and personally gave them a check and told them to pay a bill off on him and the taxpapers don’t have to pay a dime you’d still find something to complain about. HATERS.
