Rihanna’s BFF, Shontelle, dishes on the pop star’s past as a cadet –- and reveals the real reason she was always late!

Rihanna acted like a rock star way before becoming one of the most sought after celebs in the world! In fact, her BFF and former cadet school drill sergeant, fellow pop singer Shontelle, tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively that Rihanna used to be late because she spent so much time primping!

“She’s so funny. She’d be like, ‘I don’t care if I’m in fatigues — I want to be the fliest person in here,’ ” Shontelle laughs. “But since she was late, I was like, ‘Rihanna, do 10 push ups now!’ I couldn’t let it slide.”

Even though she wasn’t the most prompt cadet, Shontelle, 24, claims Rihanna, now 22, was a shining star…even then.

“Rihanna was a great, immaculate cadet,” she explains. “In cadet camp, your appearance is important. You have to have your shoes perfectly shined. Buttons, belt buckles…everything aligned. She totally was that. She was a really good cadet.”

Because she was a former military brat, Shontelle thinks Rihanna’s first film role in Battleship is perfect for her! “I think cadet camp will have influenced her a lot for this role,” she says. “She will be perfect for it because of her military background.”

Shontelle — who just released her second album, No Gravity, to rave reviews — says her and Rihanna’s military past has made them tougher than your average pop starlets.

“People say, ‘Oh, Rihanna…she’s a Barbie.’ No, she’s not. She’s the real deal,” Shontelle tells us. “What you see in the ‘Hard’ video is what she is. We can get pretty gangster.”

I think your right. Rhianna has rlaely just gone down the same road as Gaga and Perry, The shock factor. It doesnt matter how good the artist is as long as they bring out something controversial it’ll sell.
