Dancing With The Stars Cast Happy Derek Hough Is Leaving — Exclusive!
Derek’s taking a break from the popular show and his fellow dancers are already thinking about how they will benefit from his hiatus
We were saddened to hear the news Derek Hough will not be on the next Dancing with the Stars season because he’s taking a break to pursue his film career in upcoming dance movie Cobu 3D. But a DWTS insider says people on the show are glad Derek, 25, is temporarily leaving, both because they are happy for him and because it means someone else will get a chance to win!
“Derek is great, has always been great. He wanted to take time and spread his wings, and we are happy for him. Sure we will miss him while he is gone, but he’ll be back,” says our source. “We are not scared that him leaving will be a permanent thing, like his sister Julianne, we are pretty sure she’s gone forever!”
The other dancers are even looking forward to a Derek-less season! “He’s won so many times, this will give someone else a chance!” exclaims our insider, “Plus, now the celebrities won’t have that potential security blanket of going far in the show just because of his skill and mentoring. It will add more drama, and make our dancers dance 110% rather then 100% in their race to the top.”
“To lose his energy is sad,” our source continues, “But I could see him making appearances if his schedule warrants it.”
The 13th season premieres in March on ABC, and we can’t wait for it! Meanwhile, Derek has been proclaiming his excitement about his new movie all over Twitter, but made sure to tell his DWTS fans “not to worry I will be back in the fall, ready to rock and roll !!!!!”

It was a short break. He’s been back since September 2011. I’ve never seen him perform before and he’s so awesome…and hot!

I could not get to watch DWTS this season was not the same without Derek. I hope that you will return next season.

Can’t say enough good things about Derek. His energy and choregraphy was amazing. I watched DWTS just to see him and his sister Julianne. I wish I could find a video of the two of them dancing together. For her to leave was really sad for me, but with Derek gone this season, I was very very sad. DWTS is not the same without him.

I was so disappointed not to see Derek on Dancing With The Stars, I had no idea. I will not watch any of it this year, Derek made the show for me. I will watch again next year only if Derek comes back. His choreography and the way he danced is like none other. Come back Derek next season PLEASE.

I am terribly disappointed, and will miss his talent and passion. I will watch if I am bored but really he was the show for me!

I don’t think having Derrick for a partner was an advantage over the other couples, I think having him as a teacher was the reason they were all so good.

am not @ all surprised the other pros are relieved & happy about Derek’s break off DWTS.Personlly,I wasn’t too keen on following DWTS each week till season 11. He & Jennifer were unbelievable.Didn’t miss a single episode of that season.good luck to Derek. hope to see him back on season 13.

Will miss Derek this season 12. Hopefully the PRO’s who obviously have issues with Derek’s multiple wins will actually win. These other PRO’s had been paired with celebrities that would have helped them win but teir choreography were not as great as Derek’s.Derek is so gifted & knows how to work with his celebrities, regardless.
Season 11 with Jennifer Grey was the best of all seasons.They worked hard, Jennifer delivered 110% each time despite her pain from traumatic injuries. Derek appreciated that & was very supportive & protective of her. Jennifer was truly appreciative Anyone can read that.It was so touching & endearing to see because they did have such an incredibly intense journey. Am so happy they won. They both were phenomenal,their dance routines, ridiculously amazing & memorable, being enjoyed & revisited by millions on you tube!Hoping to see Jennifer & Derek dance again. That’d be huge!

I am so glad HL used a previous partner picture for this story. I found it disgusting how jen grey hands were constantly all over Derek.
I think this was an abc decision and is trying to do damage control.
I always loved all the pro dancers. Derek is one of the best.
It just would have been more exciting and fair to have had him matched with a star like Audrina.
I have stayed off abc channel and plan to continue to stay off, no new season for me…nothing to do with Derek leaving. I predict a very strange dwts season 12
