Kim Cattrall Regrets Choosing Her Career Over Family: 'I've Always Wanted Children'

The ‘Sex and the City’ star admits her work took over her personal life and prevented her from ever becoming pregnant.

Kim Cattrall would have loved to be a mother, but she never found herself in the right situation to conceive. And by the time she was possibly ready, her marriages had crumbled and she thrust herself back into work. Now at 54, she accepts the fact that she’ll never have the baby of her dreams.

“I’ve always wanted to have children. That never happened. And I thought, ‘Well, I’ll do it next year. I’ll do it after this film. And then there was, ‘Oh I’m single,’” Kim reveals to The Independent newspaper. “There is a feeling you give up a lot on this job, but you have to get a lot back, too.”

But, Kim has found a way to replace motherhood — mentoring! “Luckily I have great friends and I have found a tremendous amount of happiness in mentoring young actors,” she says. “They’re like my kids.”

The woman who we all associate with the promiscuous Samantha Jones from Sex and the City was actually married twice in real-life, first to Andre J. Lyson from 1983 to 1989 and then Mark Levinson from 1998 to 2004. She admits that her career trumped her personal life and was probably to blame the destruction of her marriages.

“You know the price that you pay – not all actors, but this actor – is that I’ve been very lonely a lot in my life,” Kim sadly reveals. “I’ve had two marriages and I loved both my husbands very much, but I didn’t see very much of them. The length of my work days is really hard on relationships. You never see anybody and that’s a very tough thing for a woman.”
