The first on-air promo for the eighth season of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ reveals Meredith’s fate! Do you think she deserves it?
We all wondered what would happen to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) after Alex (Justin Chambers) ratted her out for tampering with the Alzheimer’s treatment trial on last season’s Grey’s Anatomy finale — and now we might just have our answer! “What you did disgraced the hospital,” the Chief (James Pickens Jr.) tells Meredith in a new on-air promo. “You’re fired.” … Wait, what?!
Is this really happening? Has the whole world gone mad? I don’t condone what Meredith did, but I hardly think her actions justify her being fired — especially considering far lesser punishments have been dished out at Seattle Grace for far greater offenses. A pretty blonde doc by the name of Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) certainly comes to mind.
Back in season two, Izzie cut boyfriend Denny’s LVAD chord, purposely worsening his condition in order to move him up on a donor list. And how was she punished? Probation. For intentionally harming a patient. Now tell me, isn’t that worse than what Meredith did?

Meredith shouldn’t be fired and with derek running away he broke the wedding vowels (on the post-it) that he wrote and agread to so…. but meredith shouldn’t be fired what izzie did was worse and she did it for Adele. so everyone should hide it and the cheif should thank her.

Izzie basically took a heart from another patient who was on the donor list before Denny and did not confess until AFTER Denny died and all her friends were banned from surgery. Burke still had an injury, but did not report it and let an intern who did not have the experience to operate on patients with heart issues she clearly had no experience in, do the majority of the work on them while neither said a word. Alex, Chief, Bailey, Cris did not follow a patients (Izzie)exact DNR order and did resuscitation even though this is illegal to do against patients wishes. Lexie went through Meredith’s medical files, then put pressure on Mer (as a potential organ donor) to give part of her liver to Lexie’s “daddy” (illegal to go through medical records/pressure of potential transplant donors). Chief operated and nearly killed a patient while drunk. The only one who’s come close to getting any real punishment for their “actual” behavior on these violations was April who was fired for a patient’s death due to not following the procedures. Other than that, these Docs either don’t get caught or pretty much get a slap on the wrist for what amounts to fireable offenses at the hospital. So no, in the scheme of things, let Mer go home for a week, bake some muffins, get a 8 million dollar check and then have Bailey basically get her back to work so she can follow Cris/Alex around on patients for a few days because that seems to be the way on GA (except for Meredith of course):/

Exactly if the others can get away with almost killing patients, why can Meredith get away with this? She didn’t killed anyone, she just switched some drug that apparently doesn’t even work, since Adele is going to get worse.

What Meredith did was bad, really bad,she deserver a punishment but not being fired. Derek almost killed a woman and he wasn’t fired.
That said I think Shonda Rhimes should stick to a standard of punishment for these characters. If what Meredith was bad and deserves to be fired for it, then so do the rest when they do something bad. Izzie deserved to be fired when she cut the L-Vad and she wasn’t, and since she wasn’t fired then I don’t think Meredith should be fired now for what she did.
If Shonda Rhimes is going to be realistic then she should be realistic with every characters, not just a some.

Both Meredith and Izzie committed very serious offenses. In the real world Izzie would’ve been fired, stripped of her medical license and faced manslaughter charges. Just because she didn’t get that type of punishment doesn’t mean Meredith shouldn’t suffer any consequences. The argument can be made that Izzie was an intern when she committed her crime whilst Meredith was already a 4th year resident and because of that she is supposed to be more responsible, have learned much more and should have better judgment. Painting Meredith as the innocent victim here is wrong. Clinical trials have rules for a good reason and you can’t pick and choose when or when not to follow them.
It doesn’t really matter anyway. Izzie came back and continued being a doctor at the hospital. The same will happen with Meredith with other people suffering the consequences of her actions (Alex, Chief Webber, Derek).
