While some people are ready to say “I do” mere months after starting up a new relationship, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are certainly not. Kury, 69, and Goldie, 75, have been together for 37 years, and the Christmas Chronicles: Part Two costars tell PEOPLE magazine that they don’t feel pressure to put a ring on it. “For people like us, the marriage certificate wasn’t going to create anything that otherwise we wouldn’t have,” says Kurt. “I don’t know. 40 years isn’t enough to finally say, ‘Well I guess…’ ”

“Well, we’re not at 40 years yet,” added Goldie. She was previously married to Gus Trikonis and Bill Hudson, with whom Goldie shares son Oliver Hudson, 44, and Kate Hudson, 41. Russell was previously married to Season Hubley, and they welcomed a son, Boston, 40, in 1980. Along with their blended family, Kurt and Goldie welcomed son Wyatt Russell, 34, in 1986. Between their four children, Goldie and Kurt are grandparents to six beautiful kids, and they don’t see a need to get a ring to be happy.

“Our children got married. I mean, they didn’t not get married,” added Goldie. “Oliver’s very happily married, and Wyatt’s very happily married. Katie got married once, and that didn’t work, and she’s with this most amazing human, and I don’t know if she’ll marry again. The point is that we all tried marriage, and sometimes marriage doesn’t work. [And] It’s okay.”

“It’s not about the marriage,” added Goldie. “It’s about the people and the relationship, and the will to stay together,” Hawn says. “And that’s a big one because if you want it, you can have it. You’ve got to give things up, but the joy and the excitement of being together and touching the toes of somebody at night is really a nice feeling.”

The couple first began dating while filming Swing Shift in 1983. They actually met for the first time on the set of the 1966 film, The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band. She was 21 at the time, and he was only 16. In 1987, the couple starred in the original Overboard together, and in 2020, they both reprised their roles as Mrs. & Mr. Claus for the Christmas movie, The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two. It’s a perfect movie to watch with all your kids — no marriage license required.
